One of the fastest growing and most exciting occupations today is medical assisting. This growth is expected to continue for at least the next five years and beyond. That is why many people today are seriously considering joining this amazing group of medical professionals who are devoted to helping others. Jobs are plentiful and one is waiting for you if you are willing to get the right training first.

The training you need to be successful is usually obtained at a local community college or vocational school. An Associate of Arts (AA) degree takes about two years to obtain and involves classroom as well as clinical study. Vocational schools offer one-year training programs with similar course work. Once you have completed your training, you can then sit for state board exams and become certified. This is a requirement that most employers now have for the medical assistants that they choose to hire.

There are many different kinds of jobs you can do once you have completed your training. Not only will you be performing administrative tasks, you will also be asked to help medical professionals with their clinical work. If you are strictly an assistant, you will be working exclusively with patient files, insurance forms and coding procedures, and the massive paperwork involved with hospital admissions and associated lab work. As a clinical medical assistant, you probably will take patient history, greet patients and prepare them for exams, take blood pressure readings and blood draws and be in the exam room to assist the doctor. You also might coach patients on special diets and medicines, prepare them for x-rays and maintain and sterilize medical equipment.

Jobs for medical assistants are abundant in many medical offices that have physicians, ophthalmologists, podiatrists, chiropractors and other professionals on staff. Hospitals and clinics also hire assistants to work in their pharmacies, labs and reception areas. You can also find many employment opportunities in the home health care industry. Whatever you choose, a career as a medical assistant will reap you many rewards and provide you with extraordinary job satisfaction.
