Medical Transcription Certification is a fast growing field due to the expansion of our health care system and the electronic computerized billing systems that are currently in use. Transcribing a doctors analysis and instructions accurately and efficiently will always be needed.

Like medical billing, you are not required by law to have formal training, but in this intensely competitive job market, do you really believe you can complete without that formal education base? I seriously doubt it!

There are degree programs for both traditional classroom and online classes. However the quickest route to getting formal training is a Medical Transcription Certification. Two certifications are given by the AHDI (Association for Healthcare Documentation Integrity).

  • Certified Medical Transcriptionist (CMT) - advanced level certification

Here are some good reasons to seriously consider getting certified with the RMT or CMT credential:

  • Is recognized as a standard to assess competence, readiness and reliability in risk management.

  • High value placed on degrees, credentials, and professional designations in the healthcare field.

  • The ability to demonstrate proper training and certification related to HIPAA compliance issues and protocols.

  • Employers increasing tendency toward hiring credentialed professionals.

  • Medical transcriptionists with the RMT credential are more likely to be taken seriously by industry employers.

  • Those with the CMT credential typically earn higher salaries than transcriptionists lacking this credential.

The RMT Medical Transcription Certification

The RMT certification is open to:

  • Recent graduates of medical transcription programs

  • Transcriptionists with under 2 years experience in acute care

  • Transcriptioninsts working in a single-specialty environment such as a private practice, medical clinic, neurology, or oncology.

The certification is gained by means of the 130-question RMT exam which consists of multiple-choice questions and fill-in-the-blank answers in response to audio. MT's who pass the test can use the credential for 3 years, at which time they must renew the certification either by examination or completing the RMT Recredentialing Course offered by AHDI.

The CMT Certified Medical Transcriptionist

This credential can be acquired by registered medical transcriptionists (RMTs) with a minimum 2 years' experience in acute care transcription or an equivalent multispecialty.

There is a 120-question CMT exam, which consists of multiple-choice questions, and fill in the blank answers to audio questions, and SRT editing to audio as well. This entitles the certified transcriptionist to use the credential for 3 years before having to re-certify.
