Its All In The Code

medical coding training at home.

Before I start to focus on the intention of this article which is to talk about the work at home opportunity of medical billing and coding, I am first going to start with a rant on the current barrage of TV commercials on 'work at home' opportunities. Actually, I'm not sure which is worse the TV commercials or the Internet ads on the same subject. Some of these ads have gotten really clever as they advertise themselves as scam exposes. However, what they really do is get you to sign up to get free scam information so that a ways down the road they can sell you on yet another 'work at home' opportunity, which will be just as bad as the one's they are going to warn you against in their free report. Now, don't get me wrong as there are legitimate 'work at home' opportunities to be found on the Internet but they all have one thing in common, they teach a skill. As such, they usually cannot be found by doing a 'work at home' search as they are listed under the particular skill or trade they are teaching.

In keeping with an actual, legitimate home based opportunity; you might want to consider medical billing and coding. However, it is a field that requires that you are properly trained and also, to be really successful at it, that you posses certain characteristics. Because what the field of medical billing and coding is going to demand from you is strict attention to detail and meticulous accuracy. Of course, it would also be helpful if you have some measure of interest in the growing health care/medical field.

Now, let us assume that you have gotten the proper training. You know the code, you know the software, you know how to submit a claim to an insurance carrier, and you also know the various insurance plans carried by the insurer. So, now you're ready to start your home based business right? Wrong! Because you are missing an important essential: You don't have a proven track record. Do you really think that someone is going to trust you with the responsibility of getting them paid for a medical service, if you have yet to prove yourself as a professional. Not on your life, because what we are talking about is that the tiniest of mistakes in code causes the insurance company to reject the claim for payment. Moreover, that insurer rejection is not going to be about a few dollars here and there, not when medical diagnostic and treatment procedures can now easily run into the thousands of dollars. By the way, some freelance/independent work at home type medical billers have worked out a very lucrative payment plan where they not only get paid by the claim or code, but they also earn a percentage of successfully paid claims. However, we are still left with the problem of how do you 'make your bones' in the field.

Sorry, and you most likely already know the answer, you earn it. You earn it by first working for someone for very little pay. Or, if you have the resilience you could contact small dental, physical therapist, or doctor offices, and offer to do their medical billing for free for some set period of time.

Of course we have only presented you with just one work at home opportunity, there are many others, and some of them will be easier and some will be harder, nevertheless my contention that if one wants to work at home they need to learn a skill is unwavering. Certainly, you can choose to ignore what I'm saying to you and go give your money to some hawker promising overnight success, but in that case wouldn't it be easier to walk into some casino and plunk your money down on a spin of the roulette wheel?
